How to Write a Poetry Cover Letter

Step One: Introductions

Begin your cover letter by addressing the appropriate editor—either the poetry editor by name or the editorial team as a whole. While it’s not mandatory to include specific names, doing a bit of research to find the right contact on the publication’s masthead adds a warm, personal touch.

Step Two: The Poetry Submission

Clearly state which poems you are submitting for consideration. Be sure to review the magazine’s submission guidelines—especially regarding page limits—and confirm that your submission aligns with their requirements.

To make your letter stand out, consider referencing specific poems from past issues that resonated with you. Sharing why you’ve chosen this particular publication—whether because of shared values or stylistic similarities—can help establish a meaningful connection with the editorial team.

Step Three: Writer’s Biography

Along with your poem titles, include a brief overview of your publication history or editorial experience. If you’re new to publishing, that’s absolutely okay. Frontier Poetry welcomes new and emerging voices. Simply let us know this would be your first publication if selected—we’re excited to hear from you.

Sample Poetry Cover Letter

Dear Poetry Editor,

Please consider the attached poem—“Ode to Miso Soup”—for publication in Frontier Poetry. After reading and enjoying several poems on your website, including “Diction” by Yi Wei, I felt my work might be a good fit.

I currently volunteer as a reader for Palette Poetry. My poems have appeared in SUNHOUSE Literary, Bear Review, Reed Magazine, and others.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
[Your Name]

Step Four: Salutation

Close your letter by thanking the editorial team for their time and attention. At Frontier Poetry, we approach every submission with care and intention. A thoughtful thank-you goes a long way in showing respect and appreciation for the people behind the publication.
